Day of Prayer + Fasting

Day Of Prayer Fasting 3 002

Pope Francis has called for a special day of prayer and fasting on Monday, October 7th. He invites us to come together as a global community to reflect on the importance of peace, compassion, and solidarity, particularly in light of the challenges we face in our world today.

Purpose of the Day

Pope Francis emphasizes that prayer and fasting are powerful tools to deepen our relationship with God and to seek His guidance in times of strife. This day is particularly aimed at fostering peace in regions experiencing conflict, promoting justice, and supporting those in need. Consider how you might also participate in a day of prayer and fasting for peace in your parish, school, or home.

How to Participate

Prayer:

  • Set aside time throughout the day for personal or communal prayer. You may choose to pray the Rosary, reflect on Scripture, or attend daily Mass.
  • Consider including prayers for peace, unity, and healing for those affected by violence and injustice, especially in the Middle East.

Fasting:

  • Fasting can take many forms. You might choose to abstain from certain foods or meals; or engage in a digital fast by reducing screen time.
  • A traditional method of fasting in the Church is to have only one meal along with two smaller meals, or snacks, that together would not create a full meal.
  • You can also consider fasting from negative thoughts or actions, consciously choosing to promote kindness and understanding.

Reflection

As we observe this day, let us remember the words of Pope Francis: “Prayer is a powerful weapon.” Together, through our collective efforts, we can bring light to the darkness and contribute to a more peaceful world. May this day of prayer and fasting deepen our faith and strengthen our commitment to being instruments of peace in our communities and beyond.
