For our children in preschool and kindergarten, we are using the Montessori method of religious education, called Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). This program helps the young child to enter into a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus. Through the use of beautiful, handmade materials which the children manipulate and enjoy, they come to know Scripture and many of the truths about our Catholic faith. CGS takes place in a carefully prepared space, created just for children of this age, called the Atrium.

You can learn more about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at cgsusa.org or by watching this video.

Because the Atrium requires so many small materials to be created by hand, we are only able to create one Atrium this year. It is located at St. Agnes Church in Middleton.

We are offering this program at two times this year:

  • Option 1: Mondays, 3:45-4:45 PM
    St. Agnes, Middleton

  • Option 2: Wednesdays, 9:45-10:45 AM
    St Agnes, Middleton

If you would like your child to experience Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, but you are not available at either of these times, please reach out to Amy at [email protected]. CGS is not set up the same as traditional classrooms. Most presentations are given individually to each child. And children are able to move freely and select the materials they would like to work with each time they are in the Atrium. This makes it possible to have children come to the Atrium with their parents outside of our regular meeting times.

In 1st Grade, our goal is the teach children key Bible stories to help them develop a full picture of God’s story (Salvation History). Understanding these stories will get kids ready for 2nd grade religious education, when they will prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. Understanding Old and New Testament Bible stories, helps us understand why we do the things we do as a Church today – in particular, why we receive the Sacraments.

There are three class options for kids in 1st grade:

  • Option 1: Sundays, 9:00-10:30 AM
    St. Rose, Topsfield
This option includes Mass. Parents are required to attend Mass with their children.
    • 9:00: ROCK (Really Outrageous Catholic Kids)
Kids gather for 30 minutes, during which they will learn a bible story and do activities to help them understand the story.

High School Confirmation Prep is a two-year program. This year, we will meet on Sunday evenings. Regardless of whether a teen is in Year 1 or Year 2 of the program, he/she can attend 5:00-7:00 PM or 6:00-8:00 PM. Both groups of teens will attend the 6:00 Mass. Mass is a required part of class, as Fr. Dan will teach the teens during his homilies. During the hour of class outside of Mass, we will use a combination of three programs (Chosen, Alpha, and YDisciple) to prepare teens to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
